Day 3? We ROCKED it!

Yesterday, on the way to and from Ronda we thought maybe we could see the Rock of Gibraltar off in the distance. We batted that around for a while, and we still weren't sure. (Look in the middle of the photo below, far in the distance)

So, today, we decided to go see. And yeah, it was indeed the Rock! We had a full day of walking the whole place! We walked and walked and walked. We saw some amazing views.

So, Although Gibraltar is on the southern tip of Spain, it's a Territory of Britain. So, they speak English there. It was a little strange. Living in DC, we can go from DC, to MD, and VA again in only a few minutes time, but there we don't need a passport!

Another tell-tale sign of the UK in Gibraltar

We decided to take the cable cars up to the top. Did I mention the Monkeys? There is a wildlife preserve of sorts on the top of the rock. We had not even made it to the cable cars when we had our first monkey interaction.

Poor Sarah didn't see it as we were waking past the cemetery, and when Joy pointed it out to her, She almost ran into the street. The monkey was just minding his own business...but it was a little weird to see him sitting there.

We walked through town, on the way to the cable cars. We decided to wait until we had "done" the rock before we would shop, so we made our way through town.

We took the cable car to the top of the Rock, and got to see some more monkeys. Didn't take long for this one to jump on Jamie's head.

On to the next thing! Walking the length of the top ridge of the Rock!

Big Boom! Restored gun that is aimed at the north African Coast

Here, you can actually see the African coast in the distance. It is only 15 miles away!

It was kinda scary really. There are some extreme cliffs, and most of the way, no railings of any sort. But there were some amazing views. Totally worth the long day, and I am really glad we decided to walk back down.

Did I mention there were monkeys? I could have stayed there and watched them all day. Yeah, they may have been my favorite part of the trip.

  1. Oh my gosh! Crazy #$#)@ day at work (remember that place?!?) and just sat down to look at email, FB etc. Opened this up and I feel like I'm sitting having a conversation with you guys. Jamie, I love the history you are giving...not to mention the great humor. My favorite pictures are with the monkeys! Deb's expression in the one is perfect! And poor Sarah! Are they friendly??? Only you would end up with monkeys all around. Looking forward to tomorrows entry!
